Rogers customers not under contract will pay more for their cellphone plans at the end of the month. Price increases will range from less than $7 to over $9 per month, depending on the plan, the telecommunications company said. This decision will come into effect on bills received after January 17.
Rogers spokesperson Cam Gordon said the company is committed to providing “the highest standards of quality and reliability”, which includes increased capacity, expanding its network to more communities, and better customer service.
He points to recent Rogers announcements aimed at increasing accessibility, such as the introduction of its discounted 5G plan for eligible low-income families and the decision last May to halve the price per gigabyte of data in its most popular 5G plan.
Following Rogers’ $26 billion acquisition of Shaw last April, the company’s CEO Tony Staffieri said in an interview that the deal and associated terms were intended to increase competition and that “prices will drop.”
Spokespeople for BCE and Telus did not immediately respond to questions about whether they would also increase prices. Quebecor states that it has frozen its prices for customers of the brands Freedom Mobile, Videotron, and Fizz.
